Opera by Ernst Krenek (libretto by the composer), first produced in Leipzig, Germany, on 10 February 1927, and given its US premiere at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1929. It was the first opera to incorporate jazz music; Johnny is a black jazz musician.
