Joplin

City in Jasper and Newton counties, southwest Missouri, near the Ozark Plateau, 110 km/68 mi west of Springfield; population (2000) 45,500. It is the centre of an agricultural region; industries include chemicals, explosives, hydraulic pumps, zinc and lead smelting, leather goods, and furniture. Joplin is the home of Ozark Christian College (1942) and Missouri Southern State College (1965).

Joplin was founded in 1871 and was incorporated in 1873, when two competing post–Civil War mining towns were united in 1873.
