Josephson junction |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
Josephson junctionDevice used in ‘superchips’ (large and complex integrated circuits) to speed the passage of signals by a phenomenon called ‘electron tunnelling’. Although these superchips respond a thousand times faster than the silicon chip, they have the disadvantage that the components of the Josephson junctions operate only at temperatures close to absolute zero. They are named after English theoretical physicist Brian Josephson. How to thank TFD for its existence? Josephson junctions are good candidates for a quantum computer with recent experiments demonstrating reasonably long coherence times, state preparation, manipulation and measurement, and coupling of qubits for even-tual gate operations. A typical Josephson junction consists of two superconducting layers separated by a thin film of insulating material. These chips utilize Josephson junctions approximately 1. |
