Josquin Des Prez (or Josquin des Prés) (1440–1521)

Franco-Flemish composer. His combination of Flemish counterpoint and Italian harmony, learnt while in the service of the Rome papal chapel in 1484–1503, marks a peak in Renaissance vocal music. In addition to Masses on secular as well as sacred themes, including the Missa ‘L'Homme armé’/Mass on ‘The Armed Man’ (1504), he also wrote secular chansons such as ‘El grillo’/‘The Cricket’ using vocal effects that imitate each other.
