jota

Traditional northern Spanish dance in lively triple time for one or more couples who play the castanets, accompanied by guitar and singing. There is a jota in Manuel de Falla's The Three-Cornered Hat.

jota

Spanish dance, especially of Aragon and Navarre. It dates from the 12th century and is said to derive its name from the Moor Aben Jot. It is in quick 3/4 time. The music is played on instruments of the guitar type and often accompanied by castanets and other percussion.
