Juba

River in eastern Africa, formed at Dolo, Ethiopia, by the junction of the Ganale Dorya and Dawa rivers. It flows south for about 875 km/545 mi through Somalia (of which its valley is the most productive area) into the Indian Ocean, 16 km/10 mi north of Kismaayo.

Juba

Capital of Eastern Equatorial State, Sudan, on the left bank of the White Nile, at the head of navigation above Khartoum, 1,200 km/750 mi to the north; population (2007 est) 172,700. Juba is a transport hub with local and international road communications, including road links to Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There is an airport and also a river port. It is also a commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural area trading locally grown coffee, tobacco, and chillies. It is the leading city of southern Sudan and in civil wars since the 1950s has been the major centre of resistance to the northern, Khartoum-based government of the country. The University of Juba (1975) is here.
