In addition to the familiar masterwork Jardin aux lilas, Wilson staged the sardonic Judgment of Paris, along with a nearly forgotten work, Les Mains gauches. Thus the Judgment of Paris (following Ann Moss) presents the three goddesses not just as three ways of life, but as three very different kinds of style. In recognizing this, Manet managed to achieve what painters of the Judgment of Paris were rarely able to bring off, by his daring juxtaposition between the naked and the clothed. |
