Judgment of Paris, The

Masque by William Congreve, for the composition of which a prize was advertised in the London Gazette in 1700. The first four prizes were won by John Weldon, John Eccles, Daniel Purcell, and Gottfried Finger in 1701. Eccles's setting was first produced at the Dorset Gardens Theatre, London, on 21 March; Finger's setting was produced on 27 March. The libretto was later set by Giovanni-Battista Sammartini and produced at Cliveden, Buckinghamshire, on 1 August 1740, and by Thomas Arne, produced at Drury Lane, London, on 12 March 1742.
