Jugendstil

The art nouveau style in Germany and Austria, named after the Munich review Die Jugend/Youth founded in 1896. It flourished in cosmopolitan Vienna at the end of the century, and became known as the Secession style after the Vienna Sezession group formed by Gustav Klimt in 1897.

Studying art, Reiss "came under the influence of modern decorative arts movements such as Jugendstil and such international movements as Fauvism and Cubism"; he combined his interest in "primitive" subjects with modern ideas about abstraction (Stewart 22).

As for the exhibition's title, "Kasekrainer" is a kind of specialty sausage and a play on the gallery's name, while "Furniture Showroom" refers to the gallerist's previous career as a dealer in Jugendstil design.
