Opera by Camille Erlanger (libretto by H Cain and P B Gheusi, based on Erckmann-Chatrian's novel), first produced at the Opéra-Comique, Paris, France, on 11 April 1900. The subject is that of the play The Bells, in which the actor Henry Irving had his greatest popular success.
