Juin, Alphonse Pierre (1888–1967)

French general. A fellow-student of de Gaulle at the St Cyr military academy, in World War II he was captured by the Germans May 1940. He was released July and offered the post of war minister in the Vichy government. He refused and instead became commander-in-chief North Africa, succeeding General Weygand. When the Allies invaded Africa 1942 he promptly joined them and later led French forces against the Germans in Tunisia and Italy. He became Chief of Staff of the Free French and took part in the liberation of France 1944. He was posthumously appointed Marshal of France by de Gaulle.
