Julian date

In astronomy, measure of time used in which days are numbered consecutively from noon GMT on 1 January 4713 BC. It is useful where astronomers wish to compare observations made over long time intervals. The Julian date (JD) at noon on 1 January 2000 was 2451545.0. The modified Julian date (MJD), defined as MJD = JD −2400000.5, is more commonly used since the date starts at midnight GMT and the smaller numbers are more convenient.
