Junction City

City and seat of Geary County, in northeastern Kansas; population (1990) 20,600. Junction City is situated at the confluence of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers, 29 km/18 mi southwest of Manhattan.

Junction City was founded in 1858, primarily as a supply station for nearby Fort Riley, which lay on the Santa Fe Trail. Nowadays, limestone quarrying is a major economic activity in the area. The city is also a key railway junction, with engine workshops, a well as a distribution centre for livestock, grain, and dairy goods.
