Jungwirth, Manfred (1919– )

Austrian bass. He made his debut in Bucharest in 1942, as Méphistophélès. From 1948 he sang widely in Austria and Germany, and was a member of the Frankfurt Opera from 1960. His best-known role is as Ochs which he sang at Glyndebourne in 1965, and later recorded under Solti. He first sang at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1981, as Waldner in Arabella; he also performed in Dallas in 1982 as Ochs. He has sung in operas by Wagner and Lortzing.
