Junot, Andoche

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Junot, Andoche (1771–1813)

French general in the Napoleonic Wars. He enjoyed great success as commander of the invasion of Portugal in 1807, and was briefly governor of the conquered country, but was defeated by Wellington in the Peninsular War. Following Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign, he committed suicide.

Junot joined the volunteer army at the outbreak of the French Revolution, distinguished himself in the Syrian campaign of 1799, and in 1804 was made governor of Paris. After Wellington's victory at the battle of Vimeiro (1808), he was forced to leave Portugal. In disgrace after the retreat from Moscow in 1812, he was sent to govern the Illyrian Provinces (modern Croatia and Slovenia), a remote outpost of the Napoleonic Empire.
