Jurowski, Vladimir (1972– )| Russian conductor. Known for his youthful intensity and bold interpretations of Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, he became director of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2001 and conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007. |
| He was appointed the London Philharmonic's principal guest conductor in 2003, after his conducting debut with the orchestra in 2001. In 2005 he became principal guest conductor of the Russian National Orchestra and a principal artist at London's Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has appeared at the Opéra Bastille de Paris, Welsh National Opera, and Dresden Opera. In 1999 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, with a performance of Verdi's Rigoletto. |
| The son of conductor Mikhail Jurowski (1945– ), he was born in Moscow. After studying at the Moscow Conservatory, he moved with his family to Germany in 1990, where he continued his studies in Dresden and Berlin. He made his international debut at the Wexford Festival in Ireland in 1995 and at Covent Garden with Verdi's Nabucco the following year. He served as assistant conductor of the Komische Oper Berlin 1996–97 and was principal guest conductor of the Italian opera house Teatro Comunale di Bologna 2000–03. Among his many recordings is the first-ever recording of Giya Kancheli's cantata Exile in 1994. |
