Justinian II (or Justin II) (669–711)

Byzantine emperor 685–95 and 705–11 who succeeded his father Constantine IV. On becoming emperor, he tried to curb the power of the nobles, but was deposed, mutilated, and exiled. He was restored to the throne with Bulgarian support, and conducted a reign of terror in Constantinople before being killed.

In the early 690s, Justinian II waged military campaigns against the Arabs and Bulgarians with moderate success.
