Justus of Ghent

Justus of Ghent (lived 15th century)

Flemish painter, active in Urbino, Italy in the 1460s–1480s. He was, according to Vesapasiano da Bisticci, called to Italy by Federigo da Montefeltro of Urbino, and for him Justus produced, among other things, 28 portraits of Famous Men and a painting depicting the duke's learned interests, Frederigo da Montefeltro, His Son Guidobaldo and Others Listening to a Discourse (Royal Collection, Hampton Court).

Before Justus reached the court in Urbino, he probably went to Rome. He then painted an altarpiece of the Communion of the Apostles for an Urbino confraternity 1473–74 (Palazzo Ducale, Urbino). A large-nosed figure in that painting is recognizable as Federigo.

If, as is commonly assumed, Justus of Ghent is identifiable with Joos van Wassenhove, he had an early career in the Netherlands and was a friend of Hugo van der Goes.
