Jutland

Peninsula of northern Europe; area 29,500 sq km/11,400 sq mi. It is separated from Norway by the Skagerrak and from Sweden by the Kattegat strait, with the North Sea to the west. The larger northern part belongs to Denmark, the southern part to Germany. Dairying and livestock raising are the main occupations of eastern Jutland; Århus and Ålborg are the chief ports. Other important towns are Esbjerg, Fredericia, Horsens, Kolding, Randers, and Vejle.

Jutland is divided by a central glacial ridge into two sections. Western Jutland is sandy and windswept, with poor soil. Its coast is marshy with many lagoons and has only one good port, Esbjerg. The eastern coast, on the other hand, is fertile and densely populated. In 1916, off the coast of western Jutland, British and German fleets engaged in the largest naval battle of World War I.
