Juxon, William

    0.06 sec.

Juxon, William (1582–1663)

English cleric. Juxon was an ardent Royalist in the English Civil War, and ministered to King Charles I at his execution. He was stripped of all his offices during Cromwell's rule, but was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury 1660–63 when Charles II ascended the throne in the Restoration.

Juxon was educated at Oxford, and became vicar of the church of St Giles there in 1609. He then held appointments as rector of Somerton (1614), president of St John's College, Oxford (1621), and vice-chancellor of the University (1626). His career before the Civil War peaked when he was made dean of Worcester, Bishop of London, and Lord High Treasurer.
