Kökshetau

Capital, and administrative and economic centre of Kökshetau oblast (region), northern Kazakhstan, 175 km/109 mi south of Petropavlosk; population (1995 est) 130,000. It lies at the heart of a wheat-growing region, and contains food-processing plants. Other light industries include the manufacture of weighing equipment and breathing apparatus.

Kökshetau was founded as a Cossack village in 1824. It became a town in 1862.

Kökshetau

Oblast (region) in northern Kazakhstan; area 78,100 sq km/30,154 sq mi; population (1996) 667,000. The capital is Kökshetau and Shchuchinsk is another city. The region is situated in a wooded steppe zone, and deposits of iron ore, copper, lead, nickel, and tin are found here. The province is crossed by the Trans-Kazakhstan and Central Siberian railways. The economy is mainly based on agricultural processing industries; cattle, sheep, and goats are reared, with spring wheat the chief crop; mineral-ore mining is another industrial feature.
