Königin von Saba, Die

Opera by Karoly Goldmark (libretto by S H Mosenthal), first produced at the Vienna Opera House, Austria, on 10 March 1875. It tells how King Solomon's diplomat Assad forsakes his fiancée Sulamith for a secret affair with the queen of Sheba. Assad blasphemes publicly, placing the queen above the gods; he is banished to the desert, where he is reconciled with Sulamith and dies.
