Köthen

Town in the Land (administrative region) of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, 29 km/18 mi north of Halle; population (1995) 32,000. Sugar and textile production are the main industries. The town was formerly the capital of the Duchy of Anhalt-Köthen, and the Renaissance-style ducal palace (1547–1608) is preserved.

The composer Johann Sebastian Bach served as director of chapel and chamber music to Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Köthen from 1717 to 1723. The northern wing of the ducal palace, added in 1823, contains the Naumann Museum, an ornithological museum of the Biedermeier period.
