Kotor

Port in Montenegro, at the head of the Gulf of Kotor; population (2003) 5,300. It has been a naval base since Roman times. The town is situated at the foot of a cliff, facing the 32 km/20 mi gulf, surrounded by mountains.

Once the capital of a small independent state, it joined the Venetian republic in 1420 and was ceded to Austria in 1814 by the Congress of Vienna. In 1919 it was given to Yugoslavia.
