KabbalahAncient esoteric Jewish mystical tradition of philosophy containing strong elements of pantheism, yet akin to neo-Platonism. Kabbalistic writing reached its peak between the 13th and 16th centuries. It is largely rejected by modern Judaic thought as medieval superstition, but has influenced the ultra-Orthodox Hasidic and Lubavitch sects. Among its earliest documents is the Sefir Jezirah/The Book of Creation, attributed to Rabbi Akiba (died 120). The Zohar/Book of Light was written in Aramaic in about the 13th century. | Focusing on the "wandering kabbalist" Isaac ben Samuel of Akko, Fishbane (Jewish Theological Seminary, New York) brings to light the mystical writings of a little-studied 13th-14th century kabbalist whose work (notably, Me'irat 'Einayim) reflects two modes of medieval Kabbalah: the traditional Nahmanidean Kabbalah of serifotand the Sufi-inspired Kabbalah of the Eastern lands where he traveled. Some rabbis were particularly incensed by Madonna's song, "Isaac," about the revered 16th-century Kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria, which featured on her 2005 album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor. This was of particular note because the meeting was to celebrate the Jewish Tu BAv, a day on which Kabbalists celebrate finding a soul mate and marriage. |
