Kachin

Northernmost state of Myanmar, bounded by India to the north and China to the east; area 89,042 sq km/34,379 sq mi; population (1994 est) 1,135,000. The capital is Myitkyina. Kachin is a mountainous and heavily forested region, containing headstreams of the Irrawaddy River. A thinly-peopled state, it is inhabited mainly by the Kachin, a tribal people who grow rice by shifting cultivation and whose traditional religion is based on ancestor worship.
