ikebana

Japanese art of flower arrangement. It dates from the 6th–7th century when arrangements of flowers were placed as offerings in Buddhist temples, a practice learned from China. In the 15th century, ikebana became a favourite pastime of the nobility. The oldest of the Japanese ikebana schools is Ikenobo at Kyoto (7th century).
