Kafr al-Sheikh

Governorate in northern Egypt, in the central River Nile delta and bordering the Mediterranean Sea; area 3,437 sq km/1,327 sq mi; population (1995 est) 2,266,000. Part of Kafr al-Sheikh consists of a lagoon (56 km/35 mi long) which is surrounded by salt marshes; these have been partially reclaimed and are now used to grow rice.
