Kailua

Community in the southeast of Oahu Island, Hawaii, on Kailua Bay, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Honolulu; population (2000) 36,500. Kailua Bay Beach and Park and some of the University of Hawaii's agricultural research stations are here.

History

Oahu's medieval kings lived on this community's windward white beach, using the Kawainui swamplands to the west as fishponds. There are numerous temple ruins in the vicinity.
