Kajanus, Robert (1856–1933)

Finnish conductor and composer. He studied at the Helsinki and Leipzig conservatories, and also studied composition with Johan Svendsen in Paris, France. He founded the orchestra of the Helsinki Philharmonic Society in 1882, with which later he paid several important visits to foreign countries, giving many early performances of works by Sibelius. He was director of music at Helsinki University 1897–1926.
