Kalamazoo

City in southwestern Michigan, USA, on the Kalamazoo River, 96 km/60 mi southwest of Lansing and midway between Detroit and Chicago; seat of Kalamazoo County; population (2000) 77,100. Its industries include the processing of the area's agricultural products, car and transportation machinery parts, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, musical instruments, and metal and paper products.

Kalamazoo was settled in 1829 on the site of a fur-trading post, and was incorporated as a city in 1883. The paper industry has been important here since 1874.

Kalamazoo takes its name (an American Indian word meaning ‘bubbling water’) from rapids on the Kalamazoo River. The city is the seat of Kalamazoo College (1833), Western Michigan University (1903), and Nazareth College (1924).
