Kalb, Johann (Baron de) (1721–1780)

German-born soldier of fortune. In the American Revolution he served under the Marquis de Lafayette in 1777, as a major general under George Washington at Valley Forge 1777–78 and under Gen. Horatio Gates in South Carolina, where he was mortally wounded in a battle near Camden.

He was born in Hüttendorf, of peasant ancestry. He served with distinction as a French infantry lieutenant in the Seven Years' War, and went on a secret mission to America for the French government in 1768. He styled himself ‘Jean de Kalb’ or ‘Baron de Kalb’.
