Kalbarri

Coastal town in Western Australia, 589 km/366 mi north of Perth; population (1996) 1,800. The town did not develop until after World War II, when it became a popular fishing and tourist destination. Industries include fishing and tourism.

The present site was the location of the first ‘permanent’ landing of Europeans in Australia, when two mutineers on the Dutch ship Batavia were left there in 1629. Dutch explorer William Valmingh also visited the area in 1697 in search of fresh water.
