Kaledin, Alexander Maximovich (1861–1918)

Russian soldier. Kaledin joined the Trans-Baikal Cossack horse artillery 1879 and by the outbreak of World War I was a general commanding a cavalry division. He succeeded General Brusilov in command of the 8th Russian army 1916 and led this army during the Brusilov Offensive. After the Russian Revolution March 1917 he supported the attempts to reorganize the army and was appointed Hetman of the Cossacks September 1917. Following the November revolution, Kaledin joined the counter-revolutionary ‘Whites’ but committed suicide 1918.
