Kalgoorlie

Mining city in Western Australia, amalgamated with Boulder in 1954; population (2001) 28,300. Kalgoorlie is situated on the western side of the Nullarbor Plain, 596 km/370 mi northeast of Perth. Gold has been mined here since 1893; the region around Kalgoorlie is known as the ‘Goldfields’ and produces around 65% of Australia's gold. Tourism, based around the city's mining history, is important.

The area's economy was revitalized by the discovery of large nickel deposits at nearby Kambalda, 50 km/31 mi south of Kalgoorlie, in the 1960s; a nickel smelter is located 15 km/9 mi south of Kalgoorlie (opened in 1972).

Features include the Museum of the Goldfields, and the Hannan's North Tourist Mine, which includes historic buildings, equipment, and an operational mine. Kalgoorlie is on the trans-Australia railway and has an airport. It has an arid climate; the water supply is pumped 563 km/350 mi from the Mundaving Weir. About 45 tonnes of gold are produced annually in the Kalgoorlie region.
