mbira

Term used in the singular to describe several types of large gourd-resonated lamellophones throughout southeastern Africa, especially Zimbabwe. Tuned metal strips are attached to a soundboard and amplified by a gourd or box resonator. Also known to non-Africans as a ‘finger piano’, ‘thumb piano’, or ‘hand piano’.

Besides marimbas, Chris has built log drums and kalimbas, or thumb pianos.
Although an array of plastic instruments can be found in toy stores, traditional folk instruments such as autoharps, ukeleles or small guitars, wooden flutes or recorders, dulcimers, and kalimbas (Thumb pianos) are just as easy to learn to play, and often much more rewarding.
