Kalinga-Apayao

Province of northern Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 7,048 sq km/ 2,721 sq mi; population (1995) 238,000. The capital is Tabuk. The province comprises the Chico River valley and the surrounding Cordillera mountains that rise to 2,560 m/8,399 ft. The region is not well suited to agriculture, but some rice, corn, sweet potatoes, and coffee are grown. The province contains the Balbalan National Park.

The Chico Valley Dam, planned to be the largest in Southeast Asia, was to have been built here, but construction was halted after violent unrest in the 1980s.

The province is home to the Kalinga and Apayo peoples.
