Kalinnikov, Vassily Sergeyevich

Kalinnikov, Vassily Sergeyevich (1866–1901)

Russian composer. He was educated at a seminary, where he conducted the choir. In 1884 he went to Moscow and, in spite of great poverty, obtained a musical education at the Philharmonic Society Music School. After conducting Italian opera for the 1893–94 season, he was found to suffer from tuberculosis and from that time lived mainly in the Crimea, devoted to composition.

incidental music to Alexey Tolstoy's Tsar Boris (1899); cantatas St John Chrysostom and Russalka; two symphonies, suite, two Intermezzi and two sketches for orchestra; string quartets; piano pieces; songs.
