City and administrative headquarters of Flathead County, northwestern Montana, 153 km/95 mi north of Missoula; population (2000) 14,200. It is a market centre for lumber, Christmas trees, and crops, especially seed potatoes, sweet cherries, and apples. Its industries produce plywood, logging equipment, concrete products, and trailers.
