Kalmus, Alfred (1889–1972)

Austrian-born English music publisher. He studied with Guido Adler and joined Universal Edition in 1909, helping to further the careers of Bartók, Janáček and composers of the Second Viennese School. He moved to London in 1936 and founded the local branch of Universal. He continued his services to modern music after World War II and published leading continental European composers, such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez, as well as English talents such as Harrison Birtwistle and David Bedford.
