Kalomiris, Manolis (1883–1962)

Greek composer. He studied in Athens, Constantinople, and Vienna. He taught at Kharkov, Ukraine, 1906–10 and then settled in Athens as professor at the Conservatory. From 1919 he was director of the Hellenic Conservatory there until 1926, when he founded the National Conservatory and became its director.

The Master Builder (after N Kazantzakis, 1915), The Mother's Ring (after J Kambyssis, 1917), Anatoli, and The Haunted Waters (after Yeats, 1950–52).

incidental music; two symphonies, symphonic poems for orchestra; chamber music; piano works; songs.
