Kambalda

Mining town in Western Australia, 623 km/387 mi east of Perth; population (1996) 3,600. The economy of Kambalda is largely dependant on nickel mining.

Gold was discovered in 1897 and Kambalda emerged as a boom town. Gold mining ended in 1907 and the town's population declined. Nickel was discovered in the district in 1954 and mining development commenced in 1967. The new town was constructed by the company Western Mining between 1967 and 1973. A nickel smelter was built in Kalgoorlie 1970-1972, and the Perth-Kalgoorlie railway was diverted to run through Kambalda.
