Kammermusik

German term for chamber music.

Kammermusik

Seven works by Paul Hindemith composed 1922–27. The first, for small orchestra, was first performed in Donaueschingen, Germany, on 31 July 1922, conducted by Hermann Scherchen. It uses an unusual combination of instruments (including accordion). The subsequent six works all have a solo instrument, and are essentially small-scale concertos.

The remaining Kammermusik are: no. 2 for piano and 12 instruments, first performed in Frankfurt, Germany, on 31 October 1924, conducted by Clemens Krauss; no. 3 for cello and ten instruments, first performed in Bochum, Germany, on 30 April 1925, conducted by Hindemith; no. 4 for violin and chamber orchestra, first performed in Dessau, Germany, on 25 September 1925; no. 5 for viola and chamber orchestra, first performed in Berlin, Germany, on 3 November 1927, conducted by Otto Klemperer; no. 6 for viola d'amore and chamber orchestra, first performed in Cologne, Germany, on 29 March 1928; and no. 7 for organ and chamber orchestra, first performed in Frankfurt on 8 January 1928. Usually included with the set is an additional piece, Kleine Kammermusik, which was published alongside Kammermusik no. 1, and is for four wind instruments and percussion.
