Kamsack

Town in south-central Saskatchewan, Canada, 64 km/40 mi northeast of Yorkton and 268 km/167 mi northeast of Regina, at the confluence of the Assiniboine and Whitesand rivers; population (1991) 2,300. It is a service centre for regional grain and mixed farming, stock raising, and lumbering. Local industries include oil refining and dairying.

History

Kamsack was originally a fur trading centre. Doukhobors (members of a Russian Christian sect), including a radical nonconformist group called the Sons of Freedom, settled here in the late 1890s, having escaped religious persecution in Russia. The village of Veregin (population (1991) 100), named after their leader, is to the west.
