Kanagawa

Kanagawa

Port on the east coast of Honshu, Japan, now part of Yokohama. Kanagawa was where US emissary Matthew Perry negotiated with the Japanese in 1854. The resultant trade agreement was one of the unequal treaties (see also Edo, Treaty of). Kanagawa is also the name of a prefecture adjoining Tokyo.

According to reports in The Nikkei evening edition, barbers at Hair Station Saito, a shop in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, are pouring shaved ice into a shampoo container before pouring the cool concoction on customers.
Authorities in Kanagawa prefecture, which includes Japan's second largest city of Yokohama, are studying whether to ban smoking in all bars, restaurants and other public places in what would be a first in the country.
