Kananga

Chief city of Kasai Occidental region, west-central Democratic Republic of Congo, on the Lulua River; population (2004 est) 720,400. Industries include brewing, printing, and the processing of palm oil, rice, cassava, groundnuts, bananas, and pineapples.

Kananga was founded in 1884 by the German explorer Hermann von Wissman (1853–1905), and grew slowly under Belgian administration. A massive influx of people from the surrounding area swelled its population after independence was achieved in 1960. Soon after, there were violent clashes between members of the Lulua and Luba ethnic groups.
