Decapolis

Ancient Roman league of ten cities in the Middle East on the east side of the upper River Jordan and the lake of Tiberias. It was formed soon after 63 BC, as a means of defence against the neighbouring Bedouins.

The ten cities were Damascus, Philadelphia, Raphana, Scythopolis, Gadara, Hippos, Dion, Pella, Gerasa, and Kanatha. They were linked by good roads and maintained uninterrupted communication with Greece and the Mediterranean ports. They were subject to the Roman governor of Syria.
