Kanawha

River of West Virginia; length 156 km/97 mi. Rising in the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, in its upper course it is called the New River. It flows northwest through the Allegheny Mountains to the Ohio River at Point Pleasant, Mason County, West Virginia. For much of its course the Kanawha and its tributaries are incised into the coal field of the Allegheny plateau. Owing to the natural gas in the valley and the nearby salt deposits, the region is an important chemical manufacturing area, centred on Charleston.

Much of the river is navigable.
