Kanawha County

Country in west-central West Virginia; area 2,334 sq km/901 sq mi; population (1990) 207,600. Its capital is Charleston. The Elk and Kanawha rivers meet in the industrial and governmental complex around Charleston, in what is West Virginia's most populous county.

A study by Paul Nyden of my hometown paper, the Charleston Gazette, confirms the last finding, and adds another interesting fact: Voters in more affluent Kanawha County neighborhoods tended to vote in higher numbers and cast the majority of their votes for President Bush.
