Kang Sheng

Kang Sheng (or K'ang Sheng) (1899–1975)

Chinese politician. A prominent member of the Communist Party during the 1960s, he exercised considerable influence behind the scenes in his capacity as head of party security. During the Cultural Revolution he was associated with the radical left group led by Mao Zedong's wife, Jiang Qing. Since Mao's death in 1976, Kang's role in the persecution of party members and intellectuals during the Cultural Revolution has been condemned.
